Decreasing Importance of Science

In these recent times, science is no longer valued like it was in the past. In the past, science was promoted because people were interested in knowing more about the world and universe around them. They also wanted explanations to certain phenomenon that occurred. People who are interested in science today are often called ‘nerds’ or ‘geeks.’ They are often rejected by society for being different. These people often forget that it was these ‘geeks’ or ‘nerds’ that invented the cell phones and other convenience gadgets they use today.

People these days don’t use their leisure time to answer questions for science because they are more interested in entertainment. People these days prefer entertainment more than science and as a result, money is going out to fund entertainment and not science. Science is not considered important because it is seen as a ‘nerd’ thing. In other words, people have the mindset that once you’re an academic person or a person strong in academics, you are a ‘nerd’ or ‘geek’. Intellectual things are no longer important. They are not considered cool.

Another reason why science is no longer considered important is because people today do not like to think too much. People today like the easy way out of things. If a question comes up in their minds they can just ‘Google’ it and get answers almost instantly. They feel that it is someone else’s job to research whiles they just go ahead and read the results. People today feel too lazy to think and research. They want instant results. Science takes dedication, time, research and thinking. These are the factors that people of today do not like.

Science and research in the past is what has brought our world this far. Science has made life more convenient today than it was in the past. In order for the world to advance even more, people of today have to take up and add on to the work of previous scientist, correcting possible mistakes in them we have not seen yet. Science is basically building on the work of other scientists. This way, our findings and inventions can become better in the future.

Proposal on Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on therapy that originated in China 2000 years ago. Like acupressure Shiatsu use energy channels and pressure points are used to heal the body but wothout the needles. The techniques in shaitsu pratictioners are very different from of message therapist. Even though it orginated in China the word is in Japanese. The meaning of the word is broken down into two characters. "Shi" which means finger and "atsu" meaning pressure. I am very intereseted in learning how we can treat a persons physical and spiritual injuries just by making them relax.

Homework Question:

I believe that in the past, leisure time was associated with doing science and other forms of scholarship because back then, people did not investigate for the money but instead, they investigated out of curiosity. Nowadays, people do the all the work for the money and the fame. We do not think of conducting scholarly work as leisure because our minds are not set to receive only knowledge but are set to receive the payment, and the popularity. Without payment, there would not be anymore scientists, or doctors. Meaning there would not be any new discoveries either.

All those great scientists like Galileo, Newton, and many others have given a shot to finding answers to their questions. They get the respect they need and they are fine with that. Even though some of them are wrong like the great Ptolemy, who thought that the Earth was at the center of the Universe. Surely he is proud to have at least tried to understand the world he lived in without wanting much in return. I think that scientists today need to stop worrying a lot about money and fame and focus on helping human kind to understand life.

My Quiz Assignment

Galileo Galilei is one of the well-respected scientists of all times, he supported the idea of the heliocentric view that Nicholas Copernicus had created and had a strong evidence for it. However when he was sure of all his researches, he showed all his evidence that the heliocentric view was in fact true, but the Catholic church did not let go of the geocentric view. Galileo has done something that anyone can learn a lesson from. The Church had threatened him into forgetting all those researches or he would be killed and he did as they said so in order to be spared, but he did not stop and continued teaching behind the Church's back. What he has done was fighting for what he believed in while being aware of the consequences.
Another great scientist is Sir Isaac Newton, who has created the Three Laws Of Motion. At such a young age he was not very intelligent yet he got so far in life and became a professor at around the age of 27. Her was curious and wanted answers. As he became famous for all his books and principles, he got scared of of criticism yet he wanted the fame. So, to avoid it, he stopped publishing. The lesson learned from Sir Isaac Newton is that if you are curious, you should keep fighting to find answers to your question and no matter what other people say, if you know you are right then just ignore them.
I have learned that Steam Engines are a huge help in life. Around the time of Thomas Savery and his partner Thomas Newcomen, mining was very important as a business and their problems were flooding of the mine area. These two English engineers have helped solve the flood problems by creating a Steam Engine that pumps out the water after many other have tried. They did this for the money unlike other engineers and scientists but it was still a huge help to their lives. There are other engineers like Hero who has created the Aeliopile which was a small, hollow sphere with tubes that rotates as it is attached to a boiler that produces steam. These inventions has put human kind in a better situation. Now steam engines are helping with cooking, transportation, and many more.

Proposal On Acupuncture

Acupuncture, a treatment process that requires needles to be injected into the body is believed to have started in China. I have found out that there are 365 Acupuncture points in the human body and the fact that stones and bones that have been sharpened were used in the past instead of needles. Compared to Japanese Acupuncture, Chinese Acupuncture use thicker needles, deeper injections, and longer durations. I am very much interested in Acupuncture because it leaves me wondering how something that can hurt you make you feel better? I am enjoying learning about Acupuncture because it is something I used to ignore.

Meditation is defined as the emptying of the mind of thoughts, or the concentration of the mind on one thing, in order to aid mental or spiritual development, contemplation, or relaxation. Meditation is an old Asian spiritual practice and tradition, it originated around modern day India and China. Many religions are known for practicing meditation, primarily Buddhism and Hinduism. I chose meditation as my Asian health practice of choice because I’ve always been interesting in knowing how it works and if it really promotes a healthy life style. Often whenever I saw someone practicing meditation on TV I would ask myself does it really works and does it really help decrease mental stress and aid spiritual development. Hopefully, by the end of this project I can learn how to practice mediation and reduce the stress of modern life.

Proposal on Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the process in which needles are inserted into certain parts of the body to promote well-being. Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. It first started in Asia about thousands of years ago. I picked this topic because it was something I was interested in learning about. I have heard about acupuncture and know that needles are inserted into the skin during the process but I didn’t know exactly how it worked. I thought it would be interesting to know more about it for future references.

What i learned about ...

Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton was a man of many accomplishments. While he was alive he had done a lot of things but what I like most about Newton is that he didn’t do well in school during his younger years. It looked like he wouldn’t get anywhere in life, but he went on to perfect calculus, which we consider very important arithmetic today. Newton’s situation taught ne that you can always make a change.

Galileo
Galileo demonstrated that planets only appear as lights in the sky simply because they reflected the light of the sun. From this information Galileo developed the heliocentric view of the universe. Galileo was a devout Christian, so when the Roman Catholic Church told him to stop his studying of this system he agreed, but he kept doing his research in private. His situation aught me o never give up your beliefs when you know they are right.

The Engine
The first engines where used to make simple tasks. Engines were used to for many things, from pumping water from coal mines, the first locomotives, and even for a toy at one point. There is no single inventor who receives full recognition for the engine because there were so many contributors. This just goes to show that the more contributors you have the more the product advances.

Lessons of Past Science

Galileo teaches us lessons of using old ideas to develop new ones. He first showed us this technique with the telescope using the basic figure created by a man unknown and using his ideas to expand and make it better. Using his new telescope he continued the work of Copernicus to prove that the sun, not the earth is the center of the universe. Though Galileo had proof of this he still had to go through the Roman Catholic Church which disproved of this discovery and even threaten to charge him with heresy which would lead to death. Knowing this he still continued to work and even after his death his views on the universe became too strong even for the church to resist leading to it being accepted as the true view of the universe. Galileo's dedication to his work has taught us the ability to learn from past works of others.

Sir Isaac Newton taught us that putting time into your work can possibly lead to huge results. For example when Newton was young he was considered an unresponsive child something his Uncle refused to believe and continued to work with him. Sir Newton was later accepted into college where he started to develop his works of calculus, the three laws of motion, and also the universal law of gravity. Soon after graduating which was stalled because of the plague he soon after became a professor and even schoolmaster. Sir Newton later started finalizing his work on calculus but also had competition from Gottfried Leibniz who had his own version and also published first. Newton was so caught up in worrying about his work he had multiple mental breakdowns but in time he recovered and continued his work and became recognized being the first scientist to ever become knighted.

Engines are an important branch of technology and science that is always under development and improving itself to this day. The engine which started out as a toy in the first century has now found its way into almost everything we do today such as our cars, planes, and computers. Engines will always find ways to improve but what we learn from them will always let us take one more step into our technological advancements to make our lives easier.

3 Paragraph Quiz

This week we learned about a scientist by the name of Galileo Galilei, which was born during the mid-late 1500s. Galileo was known in history as the first man who created the telescope but he was not, the original creator of the telescope was never recorded in history. Galileo simply built on the design of the telescope. Galileo also help to the theory of Nicolaus Copernicus' idea through discoveries using his telescope that planets orbited around the Sun. Galileo got in trouble with the Roman catholic church for believing and supporting the heliocentric theory and was convicted of heresy and was forced to withdraw from the studies of science.
Galileo died in 1642.

I also learned about Sir Isaac Newton who was born in 1642, the year that astronomist Galileo Galilei died. Sir Newton's accomplishments made the foundation for modern science. Isaac went to school at Trinity College, in Cambridge, England. Later Newton was appointed headmaster at Trinity College. Newton was known for inventing calculus but Leibnitz was also known for contributing a different style of calculus. Newton was also known his contribution to physics, such as defining the laws of motion and finding a formula for velocity. Sir Isaac Newton died in London in 1727.

The engine was also an important tool of technology in modern day from the usage of powering boats, planes, ships and trains for modern day transportation. Denis Papin was known for building the steam engine in 1680 but the engine became powerful and even more powerful with the works of Thomas Savory, James Watt and Thomas Newcomen.

I think Galileo's life to me, really had a impact on the world view. After the creation of the telescope, he was able to prove Ptolemy's theory of the earth being at the center of the solar system being incorrect and backing up Copernicus' theory of the sun being at the center. Later on Galileo was accused of being a heretic. The church viewed the world as center because God had created it and so when Galileo thought other wise, the church reacted. Galileo was forced to recant and take back everything he said about the earth not being at the center of the solar system. The reason he recanted was that he didn't want to disrespect his religious beliefs but wanted to make a difference.

Issac Newton legacy is by far the best we have covered in this class. I say this because he was almost didn't get into school. Newton's contribution to Mathematics, i think, is the most important one. For some one who struggled at home with financial problems, father dying, and somewhat scared to publish his work, still made a pretty huge impact on my life. My life lesson here is no matter what you struggle with it gets a lot better at the end. Newton was a very intelligent student at the Trinity College at Cambridge.


The steam engine is one the most basic forms of any engine today. The use of this engine was to pump water from the ground so that pioneers could finish digging for gold in the landmines. The machine was very productive. The machine was made by a guy named Hero. Denis Papin proposed an idea of having a piston circulating the steam as the water was being pumped.

What I learned about the life of Galileo is that he was born in the late 1500s and died around 1650.Galileo was critically acclaimed for inventing the telescope but in fact he was not the first to build it. Through the construction of his telescope he began to discover that the sun was actually the center of the solar system. When Galileo began to promote his theory he was tried for heresy under the Catholic Church because they still believed that the earth was the center of the solar system. With his life at risk Galileo had a choice, die or publicly announce that his theory was false he chose the safe way out.

Sir Isaac Newton known as one of the best scientists of all time was born in 1642 and died 1727.Newton was best known for his work with physics and calculus specifically motion, gravity, and light. Newton attended college at Trinity College Cambridge and received his Bachelor’s degree in 1665 and began teaching as a professor in 1669.Newton was a brilliant man but he was a very nervous man too, when it came to publishing his work he would never want to because he was afraid that he was going to be wrong, which caused him to have two mental breakdowns in his life. After the publication of his discoveries he was knighted in 1705.

Engines are an invention we use on a daily basis for transportation, electricity, and harvesting food. The first steam engine is said to be traced back to the first century A.D by a Greek man named Hero and he created a toy looking machine called an aeliopile that was powered by steam. Steam power did not become big until about 1,500 years later when the source of power was human and animal muscle and wind and water power it was then Denis Papin created the idea of steam moving a piston when suppressed in a cylinder. Then Savery and Newcomen used that invention and put it to good use by pumping water out of a mine shaft. With that came many more engines and eventually a advancement in the world like we see today.

What to learn about Science

Personally, I believe that science can be very interesting if you know what to take out of it. Galileo lived an interesting life and while he died not knowing that his work would eventually be considered true he was truly a great scientist and a devout Christian. I was not surprised to find out that the Roman Catholic Church was centered on the idea that the earth was placed in the middle of the universe. What I was astonished about was that the Ptolemaic system was wrong and in effect for over a thousand years. Galileo knew this and tried his best to disprove Ptolemy and the church without being considered a heretic or disrespectful. Interestingly enough, Galileo was still called a heretic and was given a very difficult ultimatum; he had to either abandon his ideas publicly or be thrown out of the church, one thing Galileo could not bear being a devout Christian and close friends with the Pope. Galileo ended up renouncing his ideas publicly and died before the church could adopt his system. This tells you a little about Galileo and loyalty.

That same year Galileo died Sir Isaac Newton was born. Newton was a very bright man and is considered one of the best scientists of humanity. No one thing I did not know or suspect was that he was lazy, stupid, and went in to Cambridge to earn a law degree. Towards the end of his undergraduate years at college, his ideas started to form many of which about Mathematics, calculus to be more specific, and Physics. One interesting fact about Newton was that although very brilliant he was insecure and afraid of criticisms, which lead to two nervous breakdowns. In the course of his life, he published many works on physics and even theology. He established three major principles in Physics and contributed to the field of Calculus.

The development of the steam engine made people realize that no invention is fully completed. The scientist had to build on the previous works of the past scientist. A creative invention was the steam engine created by Denis Papin around 1680, which was improved over the years by people like Thomas Newcomen and many others. As more people built on the work of Papin the steam engine became more improved.

History of Science Grade 10th

I learned an important life lesson from Galileo Galilei; even though he gave in to the catholic church and recanted his belief, Galileo showed courage and bravery by sticking to his scientific believes and continuing to teach students about what he though was the truth. Not wanting to let his faith and believes in science interfere Galileo agreed to publicly recant his belief in the heliocentric system, but he didn’t give up there. While in house arrest Galileo continued teaching students about the heliocentric system. To me at that point Galileo was as brave as all the knights and warriors that lived during that time. He stood up to the highest authority, the catholic church, and stayed truth to his belief and that’s something that most brave men during that time wouldn’t of dared to do.
Isaac Newton is another great scientist. He paved the way for future scientist to come. I believe that Isaac Newton is the greatest single scientist of all time. During his life time he accomplished many things previous scientist wouldn’t have dared to explore. For starters, he created the mathematical field we call calculus. He laid the three laws of motion and the universal law of gravity. He also invented the reflecting telescope, the most common and largest form of telescope used today. It’s hard to imagine one man coming up with all these ideas; no wonder he is considered the greatest scientist of all time. But believe it or not Isaac Newton wasn’t always the genius we see him as today. He didn’t start elementary school till he turned eleven years old. He was often described as inattentive, lazy, and idle. He first became interested in mathematics after purchasing a math book that contained math he couldn’t understand. After finding this out I learned that being smart isn’t something that runs in your blood or something your born with. Intelligence is something earned through hard work and curiosity.
The engine, perhaps the greatest invention of all time. I learned a lot by studying the history of this invention. Like how one invention can have a great impact on the world. I also learned how it paved the way for other inventions to come. In addition to that, I learned about many of it’s uses and its importance. For example, how it had a great affect on modern transportation. Studying this invention showed me to be more grateful for many of these inventions that we are so dependant and reliant on, but take for granted.

In just a small amount of time I learned that the great Galileo did'nt actually invent the first telescope but that instead he made one based on a description exposed in Venice. However he changed science for the better using his "optical tube" to further knowledge on planets and the vast beyond.

The lesson I learned from Newton increased my knowledge on science. Newton showed us how gravity works and how it effects our everyday lives through his 3 laws. Not to mention he developed the field of calculus which has became extremly useful for our civilization.

Reading about the steam engine showed me how our most advanced terms of transportation started out. Also the lesson on how it was used in multiple useful ways like transporting goods, water, rocks etc. The steam engine made work easier for mankind boosting our ways of technology.

Life Lessons

Lessons can be learned from the lives and actions of scientist from the past and the present. Some scientist that lesson can be learned from are Isaac Newton, and Galileo Galilei. Lessons can also be learned from the development of certain inventions like the steam engine.

In the life of Isaac Newton, one can learn that in all that we do, we are to give glory to God. Newton studied science as a means of learning more about God. From him, we can learn that no matter how many discoveries we make about the universe around us, we should remember the one who created it and give glory to Him always.

Another life with a lesson is the life of Galileo Galilei. From his life we can learn that there are times when we have to risk our lives and stand up for the things we believe in. Galileo had almost all the evidence to prove his heliocentric theory. Although he was probably afraid to be killed, he continued to research in is home under house arrest. He continued to his research till the day he died. His theory was too strong to be ignored by the Church so it was accepted. His theory is still accepted till this day.

The development of the steam engine has a lesson that can be picked up from it too. In this, one can learn that no invention is ever complete. Scientists build on the work of other scientists. Although the steam engine was built by Denis Papin around 1680, it was improved over the years by people like, Thomas Savory, Thomas Newcomen, and James Watt. The steam engine became better and better as people built on the work of Papin.

There is at least one lesson that can be learned from everyone’s life. It may be a big or small lesson but lessons from the lives of others are what make our lives better. They can only make our lives better when we take them into account.

This week I learned a few things and about a few people. The main people I learned about were scientists and the first one was Galileo Galilei. Galileo was very talented and “invented” the telescope. Actually he heard about the idea of what was called the optical tube and was able to go back home and “invent” the optical tube quickly and was able to claim to be the first. The real inventor’s name was lost and Galileo was given the credit even though he stole the idea. But even though he stole the idea, he was able to assemble information about space and the planets. He had enough information to prove that the heliocentric system was superior to the geocentric system. But the Roman Catholic Church would not allow that to pass. He was put to trial and since he was a devout Christian, he obeyed the church and stopped publicly but kept gaining information. So after death his data was too powerful to ignore and was soon accepted as correct and the geocentric system failed.
Isaac Newton is another scientist that we learned about this week. His many achievements is what improved science. Newton’s inventions such as the branch of math known as calculus, the three axioms or later known as the three laws of motion, and laws of gravity are some of the few things that enhanced science. Newton became a Lucasian Professor at Cambridge at only 27! By the year 1678, Newton wrote what is recognized as the greatest scientific book ever written, The Principia. This book included the laws of gravity and motion. Even though Newton had so many accomplishments, he suffered two career-ending nervous breakdowns. No one really knows what caused his breakdowns but what we do know is that he always wanted fame but feared criticism.
The last thing I learned this week is about engines. Specifically steam engines and the different engineers that contributed to its many improvements. Greek mathematician and engineer, Hero, created the earliest known steam engines during the 1st century A.D. People ignored the steam power principle until the late 1600s. Denis Papin, Thomas Savery, Thomas Newcomen, James Watt, Richard Trevithick, and George Stephenson were the main people that made major improvements to the steam engine and use steam power. But the most important improvement was by James Watt. His improvement allowed factories to be cities in other areas besides next to water sources and it sped up production.
